Unfortunately, it’s not your CEO. It’s a digital clone, part of an AI-driven scam.

This scenario is no longer the stuff of futuristic thrillers.

The rapid rise of AI voice-cloning technology is making it easier for scammers to imitate voices with frightening accuracy. While the technology has been leveraged for creative purposes, such as reviving the voice of the late Anthony Bourdain in a documentary, its darker side is now being exposed.

Cybercriminals are increasingly using voice clones to defraud individuals and businesses, often targeting the highest echelons of the corporate world.

CEOs Beware: You Are the New Target

Scammers have typically targeted everyday citizens, but as the technology becomes more advanced, they’re setting their sights higher—on billionaires and CEOs.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, the telecom czar, fell victim when scammers cloned his voice in a bid to con one of his executives in Dubai into transferring money. Fortunately, the attempt was foiled, but the message is clear: no one is immune.

Similarly, Mark Read, CEO of advertising giant WPP, saw his identity hijacked via a cloned voice on WhatsApp. Fraudsters attempted to steal money and personal details by impersonating him, showcasing just how vulnerable even industry titans have become.

The financial stakes are immense.

In 2020, a UAE-based company was scammed out of $35 million when criminals cloned the voice of its director, convincing a bank manager to approve a fraudulent transfer. In another case, a UK energy company transferred $243,000 after being tricked by an AI-generated voice that mimicked their German parent company’s CEO. The funds vanished into a complex web of international accounts, making recovery almost impossible.

The High Cost of Deepfake Fraud

These scams are not only damaging financially but also pose significant reputational risks. A CEO’s credibility is undermined when their voice is used to defraud their own employees. More importantly, with multi-million-dollar losses becoming common, companies are scrambling to protect their executives from becoming victims.

Various tech startups, such as Canada’s Resemble AI and Ukraine’s Respeecher, are developing sophisticated voice technologies, and some of these innovations are finding their way into the hands of criminals. Meanwhile, security companies like Pindrop, valued at $900 million, are racing to detect synthesized voices and prevent frauds. But as the tech arms race intensifies, businesses need to take action.

Protecting the Vulnerable Voices

So, what can CEOs—and everyday people—do to protect themselves from these scams?

For starters, avoiding long audio clips of your voice being published online can help reduce the risk. For those who rely on voice verification for authentication, it’s crucial to implement multifactor authentication (MFA) and not rely solely on voice recognition.

Another essential precaution is fostering a culture of skepticism. Employees should be trained to question unusual requests, especially those involving money transfers, and always verify through a secondary method like a video call. Code words for sensitive conversations and heightened awareness of “off” audio signals, such as awkward pauses or mismatched speech patterns, can also offer some protection.

The Human Cost Behind Digital Fraud

Beyond the financial toll, there’s an emotional side to these scams that often goes unreported. The feeling of betrayal when employees or family members fall victim to a voice they trust is profound. Scammers exploit the very essence of human communication—our voices—undermining trust in ways that are difficult to repair.

For CEOs, this presents an urgent leadership challenge. The threat is not just to their companies but also to their personal brand and integrity. In a world where a cloned voice can cause millions in losses, being aware and proactive is now part of the job description.

In this escalating battle, the key to safety is awareness, preparation, and a healthy dose of skepticism.
